Completely redesigned for 2012, the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class brings a unique four-door coupe to the market that goes almost unrivaled in terms of style and performance. With ample room for four passengers in a bold new body design, we loved everything about the CLS-Class, and we heartily recommend it to all auto shoppers who can stomach the premium price tag. Mercedes-Benz offers the CLS-Class Coupe in two models: the CLS550 Coupe ($71,300 MSRP) and the CLS63 AMG ($94,900 MSRP).
Overview
The silhouette of the CLS-Class coupe is as intimidating as it is aerodynamic. Frameless door glass and a tightly arched roofline combine with a sculpted lower body and tapered, bullet-like rear to create the look and feel of slicing movement. This impression is further bolstered by the dual polished chrome trapezoidal exhaust tips that round out this eye-catching package.
With leather trim and hand-finished wood accents in rich Burl walnut or dramatic black ash, the interior is every bit as luxurious as the exterior promises. A full-length console subtly divides the cabin into four distinct comfort zones with full climate control. Molded seats adapt to the physical characteristics of each passenger, making it a pleasure to ride in the CLS-Class, even over long distances.
Upgraded Engine & Enhanced Performance
Mercedes-Benz equips the 2012 CLS550 Coupe with a brand-new twin-turbo 4.6 Liter V8 engine. Its precision engineering reduces environmentally harmful emissions while delivering 402 horsepower and a blazing 443 pound-feet of torque. The dual turbochargers boost low-rpm power while its direct injection fuel supply and multi-spark ignition help this finely tuned machine achieve 24 mpg on the highway, as estimated by the EPA.
Billed as the first in the world, the re-engineered 7-speed automatic gearbox endows the CLS-Class with unprecedented performance. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel allow drivers to shift without losing focus on the road. The AIRMATIC suspension uses air springs to adjust handling in any driving environment. It provides a comfortable ride while also affording precise handling. The remarkable CLS-Class frame lowers the body closer to the ground at high speeds to boost efficiency and stability. Mercedes-Benz Direct-steer electromechanical technology allows the CLS-Class to make quick work of corners and sharp curves with exhilarating precision. Predictive Brake Prime technology instantly prepares the brakes as soon as the accelerator eases, making solid braking power easier than ever to achieve and enjoy. The CLS-Class Coupe grips the road with a premier selection of four 18-inch and 19-inch designs. Wider rear wheels help give the car stability, especially when putting its acceleration to the test.
We drove the CLS550 with its optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive, which brings the renowned Mercedes-Benz 4-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS). This system dynamically allocates power to each wheel, favoring the wheel that has the best traction on the road. When driving in standard conditions, the drive system emphasizes the rear, giving it handling that no other car in its price range can match.
CLS63 AMG Engine and Performance
The CLS63 AMG, meanwhile, comes with a 6.3 liter, dual-turbo V8 that provides 525 horsepower. The Performance Package boosts the power of the engine to a fire-breathing 550 horsepower. Depending on whether or not you opt for the Performance Package, the acceleration of the CLS63 goes from 0 to 60 mph at 4.4 seconds and 4.3 seconds, respectively. This model has a special AMG version of the 7-speed automatic sports transmission that boosts performance with SPEEDSHIFT MCT. It has a special clutch and ECO mode for starting and stopping. Custom transmission, suspension, and steering configurations accommodate the various driving styles of the different drivers who pilot the car.
Part of the AMG division of Mercedes-Benz, the CLS63 retains the lines of the CLS550, but has an entirely separate array of options and accessories. AMG operates its own website, designed to serve customers with an especially tailored and high-performing take on the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
The Final Word
Drivers who want a unique and exhilarating performance on the road should choose the 2012 CLS-Class with confidence. We loved the CLS550, but the AMG model will not disappoint those who crave an exhilarating driving experience.
